I grew up in the town of Shreveport, Louisiana. I once described Shreveport as a place where people "come from" instead of a place people "move to". While I believe that to be mostly true I still like my hometown and I visit when I get the chance. Shreveport was the birthplace of football MVP Terry Bradshaw, musicians Hank Williams Jr and Kix Brooks, and actress Valerie Bertinelli, golfer Hal Sutton, biker champion Freddie Spencer. In addition many consider Shreveport to be the place where Elvis Presley first got his "big break" when he performed on the "Louisiana Hayride" show which was a nationally broadcast show originating from Shreveport's municipal auditorium. Shreveport is joined by it's twin to the east of the red river, Bossier City, but to anyone who has lived in the area it is all basically one city.
Currently Shreveport-Bossier, like many cities in this impoverished region, has embraced riverboat gambling and currently has 5 such casino boats. It is home to the Independence bowl annual football game and also home to Louisiana Downs race track/casino and Barksdale Air Force Base. Even more suprising than the fact that my sleepy little hometown has become a gambling destination is the fact that Shreveport has actually become a destination for the film industry too in recent years with numerous movies filmed there. As of last check Shreveport had a population of around 200,000 with Bossier's population of around 70,000. The metro area has in the range of 450,000. In addition Shreveport is the center of a region known as the Ark-La-Tex which has a population of around 1 million people.
