Austin, Texas bills itself as "The Live Music Capital of the World". While I would not speculate on Austin's rank among music meccas I would say Austin's music scene is one of the most prominent and supported anywhere. The music program "Austin City Limits" is broadcast from Austin to the nation on PBS each week. Every year two major music festivals attract people from around the nation, the Austin City Limits festival in Austin's Zilker Park and the "South By Southwest" music festival. Austin is a growing community and the population has almost trippled since the early eighties to a point where we now have around a million people in the city limits. Most of the new immigrants came riding the high tech wave. Austin is home to a multitude of high tech companies including Dell, IBM, Freescale, Samsung and many others. It is the home base of cyclist Lance Armstrong, musicians Willie Nelson and Shawn Colvin, actors Matthew Mcconaughey and Sandra Bullock.
Austin is the Capital of Texas and home of the University of Texas's flagship campus and several other smaller colleges. Unlike many cities whose downtown shuts down at night, Austin stays up late and parties hard. The city has many entertainment districts such as "6th Street", "The Warehouse District", "SoCo", & "The Drag". Then if thats not enough it's only a 45 minute drive down to San Antonio and one of the top tourist cities in the nation.
